Another football player killed, and another 1 arrested Cowboy charged after teammate dies in car accident

Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was arrested for intoxication manslaughter after a car he was driving flew out of control early Saturday morning, killing his passenger and teammate Jerry Brown.

Police said Brent, 24, was speeding down an Irving, Tex., road when his car stuck a curb, causing the vehicle to flip at least once before coming to rest on a center median.

Brown, 25, a practice-squad linebacker, was found unresponsive at the scene. Emergency workers took him to a local hospital, but he couldn’t be saved.

Police conducted a field sobriety test on Brent at the scene of the accident and arrested him when he appeared to be intoxicated.

The charges against Brent were upgraded after Brown died.
The nose tackle was not on the team flight to Cincinnati, where the Cowboys play the Bengals on Sunday.
"I am devastated and filled with grief," Brent said in a statement released by agent Peter Schaeffer. "Filled with grief for the loss of my close friend and teammate, Jerry Brown. I am also grief-stricken for his family, friends and all who were blessed enough to have known him.
"I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life. My prayers are with his family, our teammates and his friends at this time."
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. Our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry’s family.”

Brent has had trouble with drunken driving before.
In 2009, he pleaded guilty to DUI charges stemming from an arrest while he played at the University of Illinois.

The deadly accident on Saturday threatens to derail Brent’s career, which has gathered steam since starting Cowboys nose guard Jay Ratliff has been battling injuries.
Brent had 35 tackles this season and 11/2 sacks.

The Cowboys signed Brown to their practice squad Oct. 24, but he hadn’t been on the active roster.
