Skyfall review Adele’s Bond theme sticks to 007 cliches instead of reaching new heights

Skyfall," co-written by Adele and frequent collaborator Paul Epsworth, employs the pricey power of a 77-piece orchestra, recorded at the esteemed Abby Road Studio. Their participation insures a depth of sound, and a lushness in arrangement, Bond theme fans will find familiar. More, Adele has the vocal heft we're used to in this hallowed world. In fact, she may own the biggest voice to grace this spy thriller realm since Dame Shirley Bassey, who has boomed through no fewer than three Bond themes over the last five decades. ("Goldfinger," "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker," specifically).

Unfortunately, the song itself lands closer to the last, and least, of those campy beasts. It suffers from a similarly meandering melody and ponderous progression. The grandeur of its arrangement easily upstages the tune.

In other words, it's far from a killer 007 theme.

Even so, the luster of Adele's tone, and the bravura arc of her vocal, makes it enjoyable enough. And, fifty years down the line, isn't that all we really expect from a Bond product these days?
