The Oregon man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering a young Starbucks barista last week stole a friend's rental car in 2011 after suffering a "mental breakdown," according to a police report.
The bizarre incident was detailed in a police report
Jonathan Holt, 25, who could face the death penalty if convicted of killing his neighbor, Whitney Heichel, 21, vanished with his friend Nathan Bargas' rented 2010 Chevy Cobalt when the two took a trip to a Best Buy in Gresham on Aug. 18, 2011, according to the report.
Bargas told cops at the time that Holt stayed in the car while he went inside to buy a video game
When Bargas came back out, the car was gone, the report said.
"Nathan said that he and John sometime play jokes on each other, so he waited for John to return with the car” but he never showed, the investigating officer wrote in the report.
Bargas was stunned and told police it was "out of character" for Holt to swipe his car, which had his laptop in it.
After talking to Holt’s wife, Amanda, Gresham cops reported the car stolen and listed Holt as missing.
He showed up at Bargas' house at 12:30 a.m. the next morning, nearly 24 hours later, and apologized for swiping the car.
Holt told his friend he had suffered "a mental breakdown" and that "he needed to get away and rethink his life and straighten his priorities," the report said.
Holt had taken the car to park near where he grew up and stayed there for several hours before returning, the report said.
When a cop interviewed Holt about the incident, he was "sober, alert and clearheaded" and apologized for taking the car, explaining that he "needed one on one time," the report said.
Holt doesn't appear to have been charged or ticketed in the incident.
More than a year later, he faces seven counts of aggravated murder for allegedly killing Heichel on Oct. 16.
Wednesday was his 25th birthday. During an arraignment on Monday, he appeared via video feed and got choked up while offering soft, one-word answers to a judge's questions.
According to police documents, Holt admitted to kidnapping Heichel after asking her for a ride as she left for her morning shift at Starbucks.
The two were friendly and attended the same Jehovah's Witness church. Heichel and her husband, Clint, had looked after Holt and his wife's pets and plants when they travelled, Clint Heichel said.
After riding the car for a few minutes, Holt pulled a gun and forced Heichel to take them to an area near a lake, where he made her give him oral sex, the documents said.
He then shot her four times and dumped her body in a forested mountain area about 40 minutes north of their apartment complex, the documents said.
He could face more charges when the grand jury convenes
